Definition: Field Emission and Fowler-Nordheim

In field emission cathodes, a large electric field (such as near a sharp edge) assists the tunneling of electrons out of the cathode, even at low temperature, despite the work function.

The Fowler-Nordheim equation relates current density to the work function and electric field.

The CPO program uses a Fowler-Nordheim equation in simulating field emission cathodes as mentioned in Cathodes Emissions in CPO.
